Not Another Home Movie, NAHM, is a storytelling movement and a community of creatives. The company teaches families how to create artistic family films through online and in-person workshops. We support them with digital tools to screen their films, get feedback, and vote on them.
We want to enable customers to easily tell and share their family stories in an engaging, enjoyable way.
We want to create a film lab in every community for storytelling to be accessible. As we tell our stories, we actualize ourselves.
I was the only mother in my graduate school program, and my first assignment was to conduct an interview. As a media professional, I wanted to have an interview with a best-selling author, or a government official, but my professor suggested that I interview the people I was surrounded with: my children. I agreed, and the interview I conducted with my three-year-old son became more than an interview. It became a family film. And watching how my family used this film, I realized it is more than a film. It is a keepsake.
When my son was younger, he would invite his friends and was always very proud to share his film with them. I saw how his friends wanted their own films too, and this is why I decided to teach mothers in the community to create family films. This became my master's project.
When my son entered high school and went through a difficult time, I saw him watching the family film I created over and over, saying: I want to connect with that bubbly boy again. He did, and he found his path.
He also noticed one more thing: "Mama, you were a great mother."
When we tell our stories, we become. We connect, and as we connect, we gain control.
Every mother deserves to celebrate the life she invests everything into, and every child deserves to be the star of their own family film.
